Completed Research Project

Mapping cancer prevalence and quality of care in residential aged care facilities in Western Australia.

Cancer is a disease of ageing.  Therefore, it is likely that many frail older people who live in residential aged care facilities have cancer.  To date, little is known about the incidence or prevalence of cancer in this group nor about their needs and the services they receive.  This project will use data from the WA Cancer Registry to begin to explore this issue by determining the number of people living in residential aged care who have cancer and to describe this group.  In addition, differences between older people with cancer and older people living in the community will be examined, as well as the place of death of older people with cancer. This information will be used to develop a program of research that will seek to identify the needs of this patient population and to develop interventions designed to improve care standards for this group of people.
