The aim of this study was to explore and describe the attitudes and views about consent for tissue banking of surgical waste for research held by people who have experienced recent surgery for cancer. This study used a qualitative exploratory descriptive design. Data was collected from two focus groups conducted with 9 people who had experienced recent surgery for cancer. Detailed notes and tape-recordings were taken during the focus groups and were analysed using a content analysis approach. A range of views regarding issues related to consenting, information about using tissue samples for research, the optimal timing of consent, and the best person to obtain consent were identified. Further research is proposed, based on the results of this pilot work, which will trial and evaluate alternative procedures for obtaining consent.
