Abstract:  There is an increasing body of research related to pain management needs of family carers of advanced cancer patients and pain relief for cancer patients has been identified as a priority concern for both patients and their family carers. The aim of this study was to refine/establish the validity and reliability of the Family Pain Knowledge Questionnaire for use in an Australian population. The study had two main research objectives: 1) To augment the existing scale with additional items to measure pain knowledge based on qualitative research, and, 2) to test the refined instrument for internal construct validity, concurrent validity, test-retest reliability and internal consistency reliability.  Preliminary findings demonstrate a significant improvement in the psychometric properties of the instrument.
