Abstract: The aim of this study was to explore and describe the experiences of persons who have donated a kidney, using the qualitative research method, grounded theory. Eighteen persons who had donated a kidney were interviewed, as well as one family member, and a person who had experienced surgery for the removal of a kidney rather than donation. The purpose of the interviews was to identify the initial and long-term physical and psychological experiences following surgery. Transcripts from the interviews were transcribed verbatim and managed for qualitative analysis using the QSR Nud*ist computer program. The results from this study will assist in the development of strategies directed at attracting and informing future organ donators, assist in the assessment of suitable donors, and provide directions for the future support of these persons following donation.
