Abstract: This project sought to confirm the feasibility and refine the recruitment methods and instruments for a pain education program for prostate cancer patients and family carers. This project built directly on pilot data indicating that a pain education program (PEP) for family carers of advanced cancer patients in a home based palliative service was effective in improving family carers' knowledge of pain management and family carers' attitudes toward managing the patient’s pain. The findings from this preliminary project provided the foundation for a successful National Health and Medical Research Council grant that involves a randomised controlled trial to test the intervention with two diagnostic groups of cancer patients and their family carers.
