Abstract: Multi-dimensional pain assessment tools are essential to accurately assess pain, but the tools that are available are often lengthy and time consuming to incorporate into routine practice. It was therefore a priority to test a brief multidimensional tool that could adequately assess pain in elderly people while also being brief enough to incorporate into routine practice. Specifically, this study aimed to address the paucity of rigorous brief multidimensional pain assessment tools that are specifically designed to be used in the elderly population through the validation of the modified version of the Brief Pain Inventory (Cleeland, 1989). Tool tested occurred in residential aged care and in the acute hospital setting.
