Dr Georgia Halkett

Dr Georgia Halkett is a National Breast Cancer Foundation postdoctoral research fellow at the WA Centre for Cancer and Palliative Care at Curtin University.  Dr Halkett’s program of research focuses on cancer patient’s psychosocial and information needs, communication between health professionals and cancer patients and research in radiation therapy.

Dr Halkett commenced as a new researcher in 2006 and has already received grants worth $1,500,000.  In 2008, Dr Halkett received the early career researcher award from the Faculty of Health Sciences and Curtin University.  Dr Halkett has published 20 peer reviewed articles in International Journals and presented 16 papers and three posters at National and International Conferences.  Dr Halkett was an invited speaker at the 2008 Clinical Oncology Society of Australia conference and has also been invited to speak at The Cancer Council of WA research lunch in March 2009.

Dr Halkett was the second radiation therapist in Australia to receive a PhD. Dr Halkett completed her PhD and undergraduate degree in Medical Radiation at the University of South Australia.  She is a qualified radiation therapist and practiced as a radiation therapist at the Royal Adelaide Hospital until 2005 when she moved to Perth.  In 2007, Dr Halkett received her Fellowship of the Institute of Radiography.  This is the highest category of membership for the Australian Institute of Radiography and only 25 radiation therapists in Australia have obtained this level of membership.

Dr Halkett is currently the Post-graduate Coordinator for the WA Centre for Cancer and Palliative Care at Curtin University. She is also supervising one Masters student and two PhD students.

Dr Halkett is on the editorial board for the Australasian Medical Journal and also reviews articles for four international health journals.
